Best Practices For Protecting Your Devices

In today's online world, users face potential threat from an ever increasing number of bugs and security breaches.  Keeping your devices protected from these issues is an important but often overlooked, task. This blog aims to highlight the most important factors concerned with the security of your devices and information, along with methods to enhance device performance.

Update Your Devices

This is a basic first step that many people ignore or put off, instead opting to "update later". While this can certainly save you time in the  short term, it can also increase the likelihood of facing various issues and security risks that have been fixed in the newer versions.

Device updates can often improve the stability and speed of an operating system, so if you are experiencing issues or system crashes making sure your device is up to date is a good first step.

      Update And Secure Your Passwords

Did you know that the average password can be cracked in only 10 minutes? This is due to many factors, the primary being that a majority of passwords are too short and are lacking in complexity. A password should at a minimum contain 8 characters, including upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters.

It can be difficult to remember your passwords for different accounts and services, especially when using highly secure passwords, that are different for every login. For this reason, a password manager, such as the Google Password Manager or LastPass can be very beneficial for keeping your accounts and information secure, whilst still allowing ease of access.

Uninstall Programs Or Apps You Aren't Using

We all have apps or programs installed on our devices that we haven't used in a very long time!  It's a good idea to go through and delete those programs that you are no longer using, or do not plan to use in future. Remember that you can always install these again if needed.

Did you know that many apps and programs are running services in the background, even while not open? Many apps may also be set to run on start-up, which can be helpful for those that you always use, but can cause a drop in speed and efficiency when trying to start multiple programs at once.

          Clean Up Your Hard Drives

Another easy way to improve the performance of your devices is to clean up and remove unnecessary files or images. This is especially important for your system (C:) drive as having extra clutter on the same hard drive as your operating system can affect performance.
